The Phoenix Mercury have officially signed veteran DeWanna Bonner, marking a significant reunion as she returns to the franchise where her 16-year WNBA career began.
Originally drafted in 2009, Bonner spent a decade with the Mercury, taking a brief hiatus in 2017 for motherhood and earning three All-Star selections alongside championship titles in 2009 and 2014.
Bonner started this season with the Indiana Fever but was waived after just nine games, following a loss of her starting position and personal reasons that kept her out for five games.
In Phoenix, she reunites with her fiancée Alyssa Thomas, her former teammate with the Connecticut Sun. Together, they enjoyed postseason success over their last five seasons.
Though Bonner's performance dipped this year, averaging 7.1 PPG and 3.8 RPG—career lows at age 37—the addition bolsters a Mercury team currently sitting second in the WNBA at 13-6, just ahead of the defending champion New York Liberty.
To finalize the roster for Bonner’s signing, the Mercury waived center Murjanatu Musa, continuing their trend of integrating rookies as free agents.
